With all the talk of potential changes to Florida's Bright Futures scholarship program, you'd think the Lottery-funded scholarship was the only chance that students in the state have for financial aid. Bright Futures might be the largest, most all-encompassing of scholarship programs in Florida, but it is by no means the only one.

Students in Florida have opportunities also to obtain scholarships based on their subject area of study and the type of institution they plan on attending. There are scholarships for Florida students with goals of becoming everything from botanists to dental assistants. The Florida Board of Dentistry provides a Florida Dental Assisting Student Scholarship to students who, as part of an approved dental assisting program, have demonstrated financial needs as well as at least a 2.5 grade point average. Students with an interest in botany, agriculture, horticulture and similar subjects might on the other hand apply for $3,000 scholarships that the Central Florida Orchid Society makes available.

Students who plan on studying toward becoming a teacher in Florida have opportunities to apply for Minority Teacher Education Scholarships that are available at more than 30 institutions in the state. There are scholarships in Florida too for students who study jazz music, who are involved with American Quarter Horses and who are members of sororities and fraternities such as Alpha Chi Omega. A Daughters of the American Revolution, or DAR, Florida State Society Scholarship is available to a variety of students who have at least a 3.0 grade point average.

In instances where students would like to pursue undergraduate degrees - and where their parents never obtained bachelor's degrees - they might apply for what's known as a Florida First Generation Matching Grant. The grants are provided based on private contributions, which are then matched dollar for dollar.

Many students of Latino heritage tend to be first generation college and university students. Latinos also are a focus of a JosÃ'© MartÃ' Scholarship Challenge Grant, a scholarship that's provided to graduating Latino high school students based on academic merit and financial needs.

Students on a regional level in Florida might opt for Tallahassee 25 scholarships (Leon County) or Barnes Scholarships (the west Central Florida counties of Pasco, Citrus, Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando). High school graduates in Manatee, Charlotte, DeSoto or Sarasota counties as well as students at a community college in the Manatee County area might vie instead for Selby Foundation Scholarships. In Broward and Miami-Dade counties, high school students can apply for Salute to Education scholarships.

The Cape Canaveral Chapter Of Military Officers Association Of America offers scholarships to descendants and wards of the US military. Meanwhile, a Migrant Farmworker Baccalaureate Scholarship is intended to help students who moved to the United States for agricultural work and who have completed a year of college or university studies. Students of African heritage might apply instead for Negro Spiritual scholarships that are offered as part of a music competition with the Orlando Opera.
